Happy St. Nicholas Day!
I like traditions--old and new--and one of our family's traditions is to honor St. Nicholas. On December 5th, we would always put our shoes outside our bedroom door and couldn't wait to see the candy and small toys stuffed in them on the morning of the 6th. I did this for my son until he went away to college. When I got married, my stepsons moved in with us and even though they were teenagers, they loved this tradition too. I'm posting this on the fifth of December just in case you want to put your shoes out too!
It's been a busy week. My mom had a knee replacement on Monday and so far, is doing well. We are hoping she will be moved to a rehab today because she lives alone.
Speaking of aches and pains, my back is officially out. I started with terrible spasms last Friday and managed to get through until yesterday when my husband insisted on taking me to the doctor. Even though I have a terrible knot spasming, there is good news too. Doc Mitchell says there is no sign of nerve problems or herniated discs but that the spasm is visibly noticeable. I'm on steroids and muscle relaxers so I should be good to go in a week or so.
The reason for the spasms? Oh yeh Doc said it was this little one and her yanking:
"Look what I did!"
No walking until the back is better and yes, we registered for dog training classes that begin in January.
It was also a week of some sadness. Some of you might remember Rudy, my late Mother-in-Law's dog that we fostered for a while many years ago. No one in my husband's family liked or wanted Rudy. He was old and everyone thought he was nasty except our family. Unfortunately, my husband and I could not keep him because we had just lost Teddy and Seamus was not ready for another dog to join us.
Our dear friend Barb adopted him officially and for years has been giving him the most wonderful home where he was loved by Barb, her daughter and son-in-law, and two wonderful little boys who ended up calling him "Uncle Rudy." I cannot thank Barb and her family for loving Rudy so much. His last years were truly happy.
Rest in Peace dear Rudy.
Have a safe and blessed week!

Back pain is so terrible; it affects everything about your body but fingers crossed you've gotten to the bottom of it and will be steadily improving. Also hope your Mom does well with her healing.
That is an adorable tradition, one we did not take part in. Is it of Netherlands origin I wonder.
Tony and I have both had pain in the shoulder from the dogs yanking. So no to the dog walking for you for a while.
Hi Michele! I'm so sorry to hear about your back, but what a relief that you don't need to have surgery and that it will resolve itself. I think Scout will love training, as will you and your back! It will give her something to focus on. Aww, how sweet of Barb to adopt Rudy. What a precious picture of Uncle Rudy and the little boy. And that saying!! They sure do find the people that need them and are great at filling holes. Happy Happy Thursday to you. ~smile~ Roseanne
I purchased a replacement massager machine from Amazon recently-the Shiatsu pillow massager for my back. I highly recommend it after you are healed. I hope you heal soon-it is so annoying! mary
I love your St Nicholas day tradition - what fun! So sorry to hear about your back - hope you're feeling better soon.
I'm so sorry to hear about Rudy's passing! I'm so glad you were able to find a home for him with someone who could love him! And sorry your little one has caused you back problems! I hope the obedience training will help. It did for one of my pullers a couple years ago, and I need to sign up with my current Blue...
the yanking! We've been systematically working on this for months now. When I drop the leash he stays right by my side, when I touch it he darts ahead and yanks me. I've used several techniques and he's a PITA.
I met a chiro who is very gentle, and uses a tapping instrument to tap on the spasm. Helps.
Uncle Rudy... RIP little guy... uncle is hilarious.
take care

Cute little shoes. I vaguely remember doing that once or twice as a kid (as we were learning about different winter holidays). Bummer on the back pain. I hope it heals quickly. And how nice that Rudy landed in a good spot for his last years.
I didn't know that about St. Nicholas day, but I saw it mentioned somewhere else today. Oh I hope your back mends quickly. Where is Scout going for training?
